On April 21, 2023, sixty volunteers from iGEN partner companies participated in an Earth Day afforestation initiative at Il Majjistral Nature and History Park. The event, coordinated by Din L-Art Helwa Mellieha, focused on land restoration and sustainable tree maintenance near Manikata.
The restoration area sits at the boundary of the Natura 2000 reserve. It previously served as a waste disposal site for the demolished Golden Sands hotel, which made way for the Radisson Blu resort. David Azzopardi of Din L-Art Helwa Mellieha noted that the original garrigue vegetation had been removed prior to the organization's involvement.
Volunteers spent the afternoon clearing construction debris, including plumbing fixtures and structural rubble, while preparing the soil for future planting.
Sustainable Maintenance and Ranger Collaboration
The April gathering prioritized long-term care over one-time planting events. Participants cleared weeds from tree root zones, identified dead specimens for replacement, and removed rocks to expand future planting areas. Additional crews trimmed vegetation along established fire breaks.
The Malta Ranger Unit conducted a guided litter collection walk through the park, covering conservation measures against illegal dumping, unauthorized camping, vehicle entry, and hunting. Volunteers assembled at the park entrance at 15:30 under windy conditions. The group included employees from Aspire Global, Betsson, Tipico, Pariplay, and Myaffiliates, alongside several families.
